What is Cocaine Coffee

Cocaine Coffee™ was born from one bold idea:

Founded by Ryan Bumgarner, Cocaine Coffee™ isn't just another caffeine brand. It's a movement to flip the narrative on Colombia's most infamous export — by replacing coca cultivation with coffee cultivation.

Inspired by the Cocaine For Coffee™ movement, we champion the shift from coca cultivation to high-quality Colombian coffee. While our foundation is in development, our single-origin Colombian roasts already come from farms and programs moving away from coca — each coffee's origin, region, and score is listed on its product page. As we grow, we plan to partner directly with these families—working alongside our suppliers and local communities in Colombia—to expand sustainable, legal, and profitable coffee production. Every bag you buy helps fuel this movement and supports a future built on good energy.

Our first coffee comes from Caicedo, Antioquia — a town of around 8,000 people in the mountains west of Medellín, and the first officially non-violent municipality in Colombia.

It earned that name because of coffee.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Caicedo sat between the FARC and paramilitary groups, and the coffee harvest was a target — it was the only thing of value moving down those roads. In 2002 the community organised the caravanas del café. When armed men came for the trucks, the people of Caicedo linked arms across the road at the El Vaho bridge and refused to move. No weapons. They held them off three times. On the fourth caravan the harvest was taken, and they stood anyway.

Antioquia's governor, Guillermo Gaviria Correa, walked to Caicedo in April 2002 to stand with them — the first time a sitting Colombian leader offered nonviolence as a practical route rather than an idea. He and his peace adviser Gilberto Echeverri Mejía were kidnapped by the FARC at that same bridge during the march, and killed a year later.

Caicedo voted to keep the commitment anyway — by referendum in 2007, again in 2013, and formally proclaimed in 2014. Their own words for it: fuimos, somos y seremos noviolentos. We were, we are, and we will be nonviolent.

Today those growers are organised through Aprokafe, which runs a community buying centre and quality lab so small farms can sell specialty coffee directly. Our importer's name for the lot is Resiliencia. We sell it as The O.G.
